Backbone Engineer (Voice Services)

In this role with PenTeleData, you will be tasked with managing all aspects of a regional service provider MPLS network.  Keys to success in the position are having the ability to self-manage multiple ongoing projects, strong communication with peers and management, ability to think through designs and problems logically and systematically and having the ability to work individually and in small groups.

Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree in Networking Technology or 5 years minimum networking experience with an ISP or large enterprise network

The technical, or “hard skills” we need run the gamut from:

  • Strong background in field management of both commercial and residential telephone work - requires experience and knowledge with the latest developments in voice and data communications to include TDM and SIP
  • Strong background in IP/MPLS
  • Knowing your way around the various Cisco IOS, IOS-XE and IOS-XR platforms
  • Knowing your way around the Linux/Unix systems

The non-technical, or “soft skills” we’re looking for include, but are definitely not limited to:

  • Ability to manage several ongoing tasks
  • Staying collected during major events
  • Ability to interact with customers as the highest engineering escalation point
  • Being a team player
  • Strong Communications Skills – Oral and Written
  • Must be able to easily convey complex topics to other departments for training
  • A strong drive to excel in your position

These are skills that you’ve likely obtained throughout your time in IT and therefore “nice to have” but definitely not required.  So don’t worry if you don’t meet all these!

  • Programming/scripting – it just makes your life that much easier for those routine tasks
  • Familiarity with optical network design with ROADM transport
  • Strong, working knowledge of IPv6
  • Understanding of 802.11 Wi-Fi standards and Network Design
  • Knowledge of Metro Ethernet standards and terminology
  • Deep understanding of Internet routing
    • Ability to configure, analyze and troubleshoot various routing protocols
    • Good background in dynamic routing protocols such as RIP, ISIS and BGP

Bonus Skills:

  • Previous work with an ISP or large enterprise network
  • Ability to present groups of people
  • CCNA or CCNP (preferred)
